If you are looking for a tranquil spot in the Whitsunday's to kick back
and relax, do some beach combing, snorkelling, fishing or simply enjoy the
bush setting, then Hydeaway Bay is for you!
Part of the Whitsunday region, the very secluded Hydeaway Bay lives up
to its name. Don't be surprised if you are the only one sunbathing on the
long sandy beaches, or you have the rocky headland to yourself for fishing,
or you are the only one enjoying snorkelling around beautiful coral, right
off the beach.
Hydeaway Bay is the kind of destination you find yourself staying at for yet "another day or two". Travellers and holidaymakers alike find Hydeaway Bay's relaxing atmosphere is perfect for un-winding in the Whitsunday region, for a week, a fortnight, a month or even for the whole of winter.
It is a totally un-spoilt hamlet nestled in a quiet secluded pristine bay with no holiday crowds, supermarkets, noise or busy traffic. What it does have is a low-key residential area, a quiet bush setting caravan and camping park with a kiosk where ice, hot and cold drinks, snacks, bait and most grocery supplies are available. The exception is fresh fruit, vegetables and meat, which are usually picked up at Proserpine, from the south, or Bowen, from the north, on the way in.
Hydeaway Bay is 43km north of Proserpine, accessed from the Dingo Beach Road. Just follow the Hydeaway Bay signs off the Bruce Highway at the turnoff, 13 km north of Proserpine.
Hydeaway Bay Caravan Park is in a peaceful bush setting just 250 metres from the beach (and no roads to cross over). Wildlife comes to the park. Wallabies, Kangaroos, Potaroos wander through, along with the lorikeets and bird life that can be witnessed up close at feeding times.
Owner operators Paul and Roz Willcocks and Charlie Sales say the local fishing is another attraction at Hydeaway. Both experienced and beginner anglers can have a lot of fun and luck fishing off the beach, or, out in a tinny off the nearby reefs. Shell collecting is also very popular on the local beaches with visitors coming from all over Australia to collect rare shells.
Roz said that a lot of people come for the snorkelling experience right off the beach. You can see coral and reef fish without the hassle of a long and often expensive boat trip.
Visitors are now staying at tranquil Hydeaway Bay to access Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour. Your reef trips can be organized and booked at Hydeaway as the trip to Airlie Beach is only a 35 minute picturesque drive past the Drylander National Park and through local cane fields.
In all, Hydeaway is a great location for a tranquil, relaxed, old-fashioned visit to the Whitsunday region. There are many powered sites for vans and campers, a kiosk, recreational room and other activities including bush walks. Restrained pets are welcome. So bring your van, tent, boat, etc and rediscover the joys of simple beach pleasures and a laid-back lifestyle for a couple of days or weeks or months.
